Super 8mm Film
Core Term Definition
An upgraded 8mm consumer format introduced in 1965 featuring smaller sprocket holes and a larger frame area.
Technical Analysis & Context
Kodak introduced Super 8 to provide higher image quality for amateur filmmakers. By reducing the size of the sprocket holes and shifting them to one edge, the frame area was increased by nearly 50% compared to Standard 8mm. This format was popularized in easy-to-load plastic cartridges that bypassed manual threading.
