Chemical Film Restoration
Core Term Definition
Physical and chemical laboratory treatments used to recondition, stabilize, or rehydrate degraded film stocks.
Technical Analysis & Context
Before scanning, severely dried, brittle, or curled films must undergo chemical reconditioning. This involves vapor chamber exposure to rehydrate the emulsion, bathing the film in softening oils, or applying chemical stabilizers to temporarily stop active decay and allow safe transport.
