Wet gate scanning is a physical restoration method where film is temporarily coated or submerged in a specialized liquid (with a refractive index matching the film base) as it passes through the scanner's lens. This bends light straight through surface scratches, making physical blemishes completely invisible on the final digital file without altering the actual film.
