Interpositive (IP)
Core Term Definition
A fine-grain positive copy printed from the original camera negative, used as a master element for preservation.
Technical Analysis & Context
An interpositive is printed on specialized, extremely fine-grain film. Unlike a high-contrast projection print, an IP preserves the maximum possible dynamic range and detail of the original camera negative, serving as an invaluable safety backup in preservation vaults.
