Nitrate Decomposition Stages
Core Term Definition
The five distinct physical and chemical phases of cellulose nitrate film degradation.
Technical Analysis & Context
Nitrate decay is predictable and progressive: Stage 1 involves mild amber staining and odor. Stage 2 makes the emulsion sticky. Stage 3 is marked by gas bubbles and severe stickiness. Stage 4 sees the film turn into a solid, congealed mass with a strong acrid smell. Stage 5 results in the film crumbling into a toxic, shock-sensitive yellow powder.
